At one time and rightfully, theology was hailed as the “queen of sciences.” Today she often is depicted as an alien intruder, preventing objectivity when research and application is done in fields like biology and geology.
Actually, good theology is the foundation for such pursuits, as the historical and epistemological origins of the scientific method demonstrate. Like the proverb says, “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
The fear of the LORD is not a state of being paralyzed by terror on account of a cruel and all powerful bully. It is humble recognition of the supreme authority of Him Who is the omniSCIENT Creator of all things and the perfectly righteous, ultimate Judge of all people. Fearing Him is is perfectly compatible with rejoicing in God’s perpetual kindness and amazing grace as Provider and Redeemer; it is perfectly in sync with delighting in and adoring the One who is thus feared.
As another passage from the Bible tells us, “for with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” Those who agree with materialist Professor R. Lewontin*, asserting that as we do science “we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door,” have actually shot themselves in the foot!
Why? Because the house in which they are dwelling (the cosmos) has a Divine owner Who has given them, for a time, the run of the place so to speak. Denying His existence is tantamount to believing the house built itself.
And the one who asserts, “there might be a god, but his/her/its existence is irrelevant” is no better off than the religiously committed materialist. His or her assertion is tantamount to that of an usurping squatter who supposes there will be no consequences to larcenously using and abusing Another’s property.
As yet another Biblical passage instructs us, “…what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools!”
So the one who despises her majesty (Queen Theology) in the name of objectivity is not being objective at all. He or she merely has substituted for the rightful queen another regent: one wearing a crown of denial and negation. That would be scientist is trying to probe the darkness of the unknown with a pre-darkened mind.
But wait, there’s more! Let us not forget that there is, in fact, an intruder. He gained entry into the royal palace long ago, and to this day arrogantly lounges about in many of its rooms. Bent on destroying, his weaponry includes poisonous lies. Beginning in the nursery, the arch deceiver sugarcoats with superficial plausibility the lethal drug Darwinism and its related junk science doctrines.
This intruder is represented in the Bible by a scaly creature which has no feet. And he is not the sort who would seek entry at the front door in the first place. He slithered in through a crack in the foundation: that fear of the LORD which is the beginning of knowledge.
